Paul Harrison

Paul is a Human Resources Industrial Relations specialist with over a decade in management with expertise in coaching and mentoring, human resources development, and not-for-profit leadership.

Paul has a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours in Human Resources Management and Industrial Relations from Curtin University. Paul also has a Graduate Certificate in Psychology in Business Psychology from Curtin University and is currently undertaking his Doctor of Philosophy in Business Management (Industrial Relations). Paul brings practical, academic and theoretical applications to his clients.

Paul is passionate about delivering exceptional customer service and has previously managed some major retail brands in WA. Paul is a subject matter expert for developing leadership programs, team building and group dynamic workshops. Paul’s work experience and lifelong journey as a Scout have allowed him to specialise in training, learning and development. This journey has developed his expertise in human resources development, including his experience in mentoring and coaching at a national and international level.

Paul applies a holistic approach to human resources management with a focus on practical and robust performance management systems. Paul has designed and implemented several solutions where fairness and equity are at the centre of building an efficient strategy to bring out the best performance of team members.

Paul is a mid-senior-level member of the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) and a member of the Industrial Relations Society of WA. Paul is currently a member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM) and the Association of Industrial Relations Academics of Australia and New Zealand (AIRAANZ) and regularly contributes to academia. Paul frequently guest lectures commerce students across some of the national Australian universities regarding Human Resource Practices, Industrial Relations, and Workplace Health and Safety. Paul’s honours research involved exploring ‘Why Small Businesses Dismiss Employees’, where he examined the events preceding dismissal, the reasons for dismissal, and the processes a small business uses to dismiss an employee. The project included how small business owners interpret, understand, and use the Small Business Fair Dismissal Code. Paul’s PhD research is groundbreaking in examining the industrial relations interpretation and compliance for Small Hospitality Businesses and psychosocial risk management in Western Australia.

Paul is a qualified Employment Relations/Industrial Relations specialist with honours including legal areas such as Employment Law, Contract Law, and Health, Safety and Environmental Law (HSE). Paul is fully capable of providing compliance support for all areas of human resources, including recruitment and employment contracts, performance management and appraisals, and termination and ending employment. Further, he can assist with interpreting the modern awards and the complexities of enterprise agreements, grievances and dispute resolution, conciliation and Fair Work compliance, disciplinary matters, workplace health and safety policies, and other Fair Work and Industrial instruments. Paul can assist in the delivery of the ISO9001 and ISO45003 standards through applied research and best-practice modelling.

Paul’s not-for-profit sector experience includes serving on several boards, leadership teams and committees in the directorship of employment relations for paid employees and volunteers, organisational governance and policy development, international industrial relations, and human resources management for non-government organisations.
